AAAA Big 16 Playoffs Begin Friday;

#6 Fort Dorchester travels to #3 Dutch Fork Friday night . . .

Monday, November 7, 2005

Irmo SC - - The Silver Foxes of Dutch Fork High School pulled away in the latter stages of the game to put away the Patriots of Fort Dorchester 31-12 in the first round of the Big 16 AAAA playoffs Friday night in Irmo. For the second straight season, the Patriots were eliminated in the first round, as they finished their season with a 5-7 record. Dutch Fork will advance to face Stratford in the second round as they improve to 9-3 on the year.

The Patriots kept the game close for most of the game until two late scores in the closing minutes of the game did the Pats in.

The Silver Foxes out gained the Patriots 275-201 in total yards but the key was in big plays. A punt return for a score and a late interception leading to a field goal in the final few minutes of the game was the difference.

The Silver Foxes capped the first scoring drive of the game when Osh Robertson scored from 17 yards out to give Dutch Fork a 7-0 first quarter lead. The scoring drive covered 31 yards in just four plays.

Dutch Fork would pad their first half lead when quarterback Zach Cornett hit a wide open Mark Stokes on a 7-yard pass to give the Foxes a 14-0 cushion in the second quarter. The score came following a Patriot punt deep from their own territory.

The Patriots would answer just before the end of the half when they marched 74 yards in 13 plays to put their first points on the board. Derrick Middleton scored from 12 yards out making the score to 14-6 at the half.

The Patriots was the first team on the scoreboard in the second half when Ryan Ward tossed a 17 yard pass to Kevin White to pull the Pats to within two 14-12. The score capped a 5 play, 46-yard drive.

Just before the end of the third quarter, Fort D was forced to punt from their own 12 yard line. Stephen Goulet fielded the punt from the Patriots 39 yard line and returned it for the touchdown. The scored gave the Silver Foxes a 21-12 lead heading to the final quarter of play.

Dutch Fork would put the game away when Ward’s pass was picked off at the Patriots 21 yard line by Brandon Davis. The Patriots kept the Foxes out of the end zone but gave up a 22-yard field goal for a 24-12 Fox lead with 3:53 left to play in the game.

Dutch Fork then put the icing on the cake when Osh Robertson added a 30-yard run with 1:27 remaining in the game for the final 31-12 margin.

Derrick Middleton led the Patriot in rushing with 88 yards and a touchdown. Quarterback Ryan Ward did not have a very good night passing, completing only four of 22 passes for 47 yards and a touchdown. He also had one picked off. Dutch Fork was led by Osh Robertson with 95 yards and two touchdowns.

The loss ends the Patriots season with a 5-7 record while Dutch Fork improved to 9-3. They will advance to the second round of the state playoffs, facing Stratford next week on the road.

The Fort Wins On The Road

Defeats Hilton Head 24-7. . .

Sunday, October 23, 2005

The Patriots traveled to Hilton Head Friday night to take on the winless Seahawks and came away with their first region win and another victory on the road. The Patriots are 3-1 on the road but only 1-4 at home this season.

Hilton Head High School's inability to capitalize on its opportunities kept victory out of reach Friday at Community Stadium as the Seahawks lost 24-7 to Region 8-AAAA opponent Fort Dorchester (4-5, 1-2).

The win snaps the Patriots three game losing streak and gives them their first win in the region.

Akeem Christopher, always a bright spot in the Seahawks' (0-9, 0-4) offense and defense, scored the Seahawks' lone touchdown, a 70-yard pass from junior quarterback Jason Aiken with 53.2 seconds left to play in the third quarter.

On the ensuing second-and-12 at the Seahawks' 42, Aiken completed a 15-yard pass to senior wide receiver Billy Schilling, who was wide open in the middle of the field. Schilling turned to his left and tossed a lateral pass to Christopher.
Christopher ran about 10 yards up the sideline before fumbling the ball, which the Patriots recovered.

A 15-yard penalty for a Seahawks' personal foul after the play ended put Fort Dorchester on the Seahawks' 28.

It took the Patriots a mere 11 seconds to score.

Brandon Smith ran four yards for the touchdown after Kevin White caught a 24-yard pass from quarterback Ryan Ward.

Most of the Patriots' drives were longer, though. Its 70-yard scoring drive in the second quarter took 2:54. Derrick Middleton, who led the Patriots in rushing yards with 122, legged in Fort Dorchester's first touchdown from 7 yards out with 2:41 left in the second quarter.

Patriots On The Road To Hilton Head;

Take on winless Seahawks Friday night. . .

Thursday, October 20, 2005

The Patriots will be looking to snap their 3-game losing streak when they take on Hilton Head Friday night on the Island. The Seahawks have not won a game this season and stand at 0-8. The Pats have lost their last three games and are 3-5 for the year.

The game is an important one for the Patriots as they are still fighting for home field advantage in the playoffs that begin in three weeks. If the Patriots could win the final three games on their schedule, they have a shot at hosting in the first round of the Big 16 playoffs.

Named by Post & Courier for his play against Cougars. . .

Tuesday, October 18, 2005

Colleton County ruined the Patriots homecoming with a 33-15 victory over the Patriots last Friday, however the play of Carlos Dunlap earned him the Post & Courier Player of the Week award.

Dunlap recorded 20 tackles in the game including eight tackles for loss and had two quarterback sacks. Dunlap, a 6-6, 235 pound junior, is one of the top players in the state according to several publications.

Dunlap is the third leading tackler on the Patriots squad this season and leads the team in sacks with five and fumble recoveries with three. He has returned two fumbles for touchdowns this season. He has 14 tackles for loss and six quarterback hurries from his defensive end position.

Patriots Suffer Worst Loss of Season;

Fall 33-15 to Colleton County. . .

Friday, October 14, 2005

Colleton County came in to Bagwell Stadium and handed the Patriots of Fort Dorchester their worst defeat of the season 33-15. The loss spoiled the Pats homecoming, dropping the Patriots to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in Region 8-AAAA.

The loss hurts the Patriots chances at a region title but still have an outside chance of hosting a first round playoff game if they could win the remaining games on their schedule.

The loss is the third straight for the Pats after winning three in a row back in September. They are only 1-4 on their home turf this season.

The Patriots would get on the board first when Stephen Harlen tackled the Cougar tailback in the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 lead. The Patriots held that lead into the second quarter when Derrick Middleton scored on an 81-yard jaunt, the longest run of his career, to put the Pats up 9-0

Colleton County would answer right away when Bryan Washington took the ensuing kick=off and returned it 88 yards for the touchdown putting Colleton County back in the game trailing 9-6.

Zach Singleton and Jerome Magwood would each add short runs for Colleton County and the Cougars took a 20-9 lead. The Fort scored with just 17 seconds in the half when quarterback Ryan Ward hit Kevin White on a 14 yard pass to close the game to 20-15 as the teams headed into the half.

Colleton County would add a touchdown in the third when Singleton scored on a quarterback keeper and Ramon Taylor added a 2-yard run in the final frame to give the Cougars the 33-15 win.

The Patriots had more total yards in the game racking up 194 yards of offense and holding the Cougars to just 179 total yards. Derrick Middleton ran for 129 yards and a score including the 81 career high run for a TD in the second quarter.

The Patriots lost four fumbles in the game giving the Cougars good field position on several of their scoring drives. Quarterback Ryan Ward was also intercepted twice giving six turnovers to the Cougars.

The Fort will be on the road for the next two games traveling to Hilton Head next Friday and Summerville in two weeks.

Dunlap turned in an outstanding performance scoring two touchdowns in the game. One on a fumble recovery returning it 34 yards for a score, the other blocking a Trojan punt and recovering it in the end zone for the other.

Patriots Hold Off Trojans

Pick up first win of the season with 20-12 victory . . .

September 9, 2005

Fort Dorchester picked up a big road win Friday night as the Pats defeated James Island 20-12 in James Island. The win improves the Patriots to 1-2 on the young season while James Island falls to 1-2.

Dennis Smith runs for a first down Friday

Carlos Dunlap was the games big play maker scoring a pair of touchdowns from the defensive side of the ball.

Dunlap returned a fumble 34 yards for the Patriots first score and blocked a punt recovering it in the end zone for another. Dunlap, a 6-6, 240 junior, also had three quarterback hurries and two pass deflections in the game.

James Island got on the board first in the opening quarter when Martin McKelvey returned a put 37 yards for the first score of the game. The Fort answered on Dunlap's fumble return for the TD making it 7-6 Pats. The Patriots would put two more scores up in the second quarter. Dennis Smith, who finished the game with 62 yards on 21 carries, scored from 6-yards out to put the Pats up 14-6.

Dunlap got his second TD on the night when he broke through the Trojan line and blocked a punt from the 14 yard line. He chased it down in the end zone pouncing on it for the score.

QB Ryan Ward throws a pass

The Trojans tried to come back scoring on a Ron Tealing 15 yard pass from quarterback Michael Rentz making it 20-12. Once again the Patriots defense held in the closing minutes of the game taking over on downs when the Trojans failed on a fourth and five from the Pats 22 yard line.

The Patriots extend their win streak over James Island to four games and winning for only the second time at Memorial Stadium.

Now the Patriots must get ready for a trip to Wando to take on the Warriors, who is ranked in the top 10 in the state in the AP poll. Game time at Wando is 8 pm Friday night.

Season Off To A Familiar Start

2004 Season and 2005 Season look quite the same . . .

September 6, 2005

If the 2005 football season looks similar to the 2004 season, one can see why. The Patriots got the 2004 season off with two straight losses before defeating James Island at home to improve to1-2. The Pats lost to Goose Creek by a touchdown then lost to Berkeley in overtime.

Move forward to the current 2005 season. The Patriots lost to Goose Creek by a touchdown in the first game of the season, and then lost to Berkeley in overtime.

Will the same hold true this week when the Pats travel to James Island to take on the Trojans? Friday night will determine that fact. The Trojans enter the game at 1-1 with a win over Battery Creek and a loss to Summerville last week. The game will be played at Trojan Field where the Patriots have only won one time, the last meeting there back in 2003.

Head coach Steve LaPrad will be looking to turn the Patriots fortunes around and pull off the win this week. The Pats will count on statistical leaders such as running backs Derrick Middleton (153 yards, 3 TDs, 76.5 avg) and Dennis Smith (58 yards, 29.0 avg); quarterback Ryan Ward (20-44, 0 TD, 124 avg); receivers Kevin White (12 catches, 140 yds) and Keenan Martino (3 catches, 46 yards); defensive leaders LB Robert Quinn (40 tackles, 2 sacks), Larry Cook (23 tackles, 1 fumble rec.) and Durante Nixon (16 tackles, 1 sack).

LB Robert Quinn

With this core unit and others, the Patriots will look to be successful this Friday night!

Fort Dorchester got on the board first early in the second quarter when Mel Capers recovered a blocked punt in the end zone for a 6-0 Patriots lead. Berkeley however came right back scoring on their next possession when Kyle Brown scored from three yards out to give Berkeley a 7-6 lead.

Following a Mark Weston interception of a Ryan Ward pass, Berkeley marched 25-yards in eight plays. Quarterback Keith Rose took it in from 4-yards out to give Berkeley a 14-6 lead at the half.

The Stags scored twice more early in the third quarter on Rose’s 23 yard run and a Thomas Brittle 49 yard pass from Rose to lead 27-6 with 7:14 left in the third quarter.

The Patriots then recorded a remarkable come-back scoring three times in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 27.
